Donald Duke Explains Why Tinubu Could Secure Victory in the 2027 Presidential Election
Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties fail to unite behind a single candidate.
Duke made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed ongoing discussions among opposition groups seeking to form a coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
According to Duke, the opposition's inability to present a common front could significantly strengthen Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office.
He noted that a fragmented opposition would likely split votes among several candidates, creating a pathway for the incumbent president to retain power even without securing an overwhelming majority of votes nationwide.
Duke argued that while Tinubu could win under such circumstances, the victory might still reflect what he described as a "minority government," suggesting that the president may not receive the support of a majority of voters across the country.
Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Duke pointed out that Tinubu won the presidency with approximately 37 percent of the total votes cast. He suggested that a similar scenario could occur in 2027, with the president potentially securing an even smaller percentage if opposition parties remain divided.
The former governor emphasized that Nigeria’s electoral system does not necessarily require a candidate to win the majority of all votes cast nationwide. Instead, a candidate only needs to secure the highest number of votes while also meeting the constitutional requirement of obtaining at least 25 percent of votes in two-thirds of the states.
According to Duke, this electoral structure could work in Tinubu’s favour if opposition votes are spread across multiple candidates. In such a situation, he explained, even a narrow lead over rival candidates could be enough to secure victory.
His comments come amid growing conversations about the possibility of a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as political stakeholders continue to assess strategies for challenging the incumbent administration.
With political realignments already taking shape across party lines, Duke's remarks highlight the crucial role that opposition unity—or the lack of it—could play in determining the outcome of the next presidential race.
