Tinubu’s Aide Nwabufo Criticises Peter Obi Over Comments on US Court Records Case
A fresh war of words has emerged between supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former presidential candidate Peter Obi following comments surrounding an ongoing legal matter in the United States involving records linked to the Nigerian president.
Fredrick Nwabufo, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Public Engagement, has strongly criticised Obi over his remarks concerning the case, describing the former Anambra State governor’s comments as misplaced and politically motivated.
The controversy stems from a legal request seeking the release of documents reportedly connected to investigations involving President Tinubu. The Nigerian leader, who joined the case as an intervenor, recently urged a United States district court to deny the request filed by Aaron Greenspan. Tinubu also asked the court to permit the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to continue withholding certain records and maintaining redactions on portions of previously released documents.
Reacting to the development, Obi issued a statement titled “A President and the Endless Question of His Past,” in which he argued that the president should address public concerns regarding the matter rather than seek to prevent the release of records he described as being of significant public interest.
However, Nwabufo dismissed Obi’s position, insisting that the allegations referenced in the case have been examined repeatedly and found to be without merit.
In a post shared on X, the presidential aide called for more responsible political discourse ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, political campaigns should be driven by ideas and policies rather than what he described as repeated attempts to revive allegations that have already been addressed through legal and institutional processes.
Nwabufo maintained that claims concerning Tinubu’s past have been investigated on multiple occasions and rejected by relevant authorities, including judicial institutions. He further accused opposition figures of recycling old narratives as a political strategy in the absence of substantive campaign issues.
The presidential aide also turned his attention to Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, raising concerns about governance challenges that occurred during his administration. Nwabufo alleged that Obi’s tenure was marked by issues including labour disputes involving teachers, medical professionals and judicial workers, as well as security and infrastructure challenges.
As political activities gradually build towards the 2027 presidential election, Nwabufo urged political leaders to focus on presenting solutions to the country’s pressing challenges rather than engaging in personal attacks and controversies.
He concluded by challenging Obi and other opposition figures to articulate clear policy alternatives and explain why Nigerians should entrust them with leadership in the next election cycle.
The exchange highlights the growing political tensions ahead of 2027, with both sides seeking to shape public perception as discussions around governance, accountability and leadership continue to dominate the national conversation.
