2027: Fresh Controversy Surrounds Gbenga Abiola’s APC Candidacy in Agege
Fresh controversy has emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege, Lagos State, following the emergence of Hon. Gbenga Abiola, popularly known as Agbelebu, as the party’s candidate for Agege Constituency I in the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election.
Abiola, a former Vice Chairman and Sole Administrator of Agege Local Government, was declared the APC candidate after a disputed primary process that generated disagreements among party stakeholders.
The development has continued to attract attention within the constituency, particularly following the decision of former Agege Local Government Chairman, Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, who had contested the APC ticket, to pursue the Assembly seat under the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The controversy dates back to the party’s May primary, when supporters of Abiola rejected an earlier result that declared Egunjobi the winner. Abiola’s supporters alleged that the process was not properly conducted and questioned the authenticity of the result being circulated at the time.
The APC subsequently declared Abiola its candidate, a development that was welcomed by his supporters and some residents in the constituency.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the internal disagreements have raised discussions about how the Assembly contest could affect the wider political landscape in Agege, including support for other APC candidates on the ballot.
However, claims that the controversy will translate into losses for the APC in the presidential or governorship contests remain political concerns rather than established electoral outcomes. The eventual impact will depend on voter decisions, party reconciliation efforts and developments leading up to the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Abiola has previously appealed to supporters and other aspirants to avoid insults and attacks, urging party members to work toward unity following the contentious primary process.
