Peter Obi Pledges Life Imprisonment for Hard Drug Importers If Elected President
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to introduce severe penalties for individuals involved in the importation of hard drugs into Nigeria if elected president in 2027.
Obi reportedly made the declaration during a town hall meeting with NDC members and supporters in Kaduna, where he spoke about the need for stronger measures to tackle drug trafficking and protect young Nigerians from the effects of illicit substances.
According to the report, Obi said anyone found importing hard drugs into the country would face life imprisonment, regardless of the person’s social or political status.
The former Anambra State governor’s position comes amid ongoing concerns over drug trafficking and substance abuse in Nigeria, with law-enforcement agencies continuing efforts to disrupt the illegal drug trade.
Obi also used the occasion to emphasise the importance of political leaders addressing issues that directly affect Nigerians, particularly young people and communities facing social and economic challenges.
The proposed tough stance on drug importation is now part of the issues surrounding Obi’s campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
