Adeleke Raises Concerns Over Detentions, Reveals Kukah Persuaded Him to Attend Peace Accord Signing
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has voiced concern over the alleged detention of members of his political camp ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, questioning the motives behind the arrests and their potential impact on the electoral process.
Speaking during an interview, the governor disclosed that he had been in discussions with Bishop Matthew Kukah regarding a planned peace accord signing event. Adeleke revealed that he was initially unwilling to attend the programme but eventually agreed after a personal appeal from the respected cleric.
According to the governor, only a small number of those reportedly detained had been released, while Alaba Popoola, whom he identified as his party’s candidate, remained in custody in Abuja.
Adeleke questioned the rationale behind the arrests, arguing that if his political opponents were confident of victory at the polls, there would be no need for what he described as intimidation tactics. He alleged that federal influence was being used to harass, arrest, and suppress political opponents ahead of the election.
Despite the situation, the governor maintained that he remains confident about his electoral prospects. He stated that the achievements of his administration would play a significant role in shaping voters’ decisions, expressing confidence that his government’s performance would speak for itself.
Adeleke further insisted that the reported pressure and intimidation would not deter him or weaken his resolve as the election approaches.
Explaining the circumstances that led to his decision to attend the peace accord signing, the governor said Bishop Kukah personally urged him to participate in the event.
“As I'm speaking to you, I've been talking to Bishop Matthew Kukah because I did not want to attend that signing. He said, ‘Please respect me,’ and asked me to come. He also said he would engage with those involved. They only released about 14 people, while our candidate, Alaba Popoola, is still languishing in jail in Abuja,” Adeleke stated.
The development comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State as stakeholders continue preparations for the governorship election.
