According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has once again asserted his dominance over Rivers State politics.
Speaking at a civic reception in Ogu on Saturday, Wike sent a clear message to his supporters: the ongoing power struggle with Governor Siminalayi Fubara is under his control.
Wike, who was honoured by the Wariwike Ethnic Nationality, assured his allies that there was no cause for alarm. "Go home and sleep with your two eyes closed. We’re in charge," he declared.
This bold statement comes after months of political turbulence, including a period of emergency rule in 2025 and persistent threats of impeachment against Fubara by lawmakers loyal to the Minister.
In a strategic move to survive the onslaught, Governor Fubara recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This shift is widely seen as an attempt to gain federal protection against impeachment.
Wike, however, has countered by launching the "Renewed Hope Ambassadors," a group dedicated to President Tinubu’s re-election, further tightening his grip on the state's political structure.
Wike also used the event to distinguish between his "original" planners from 2014 and "later-day converts," implying that those currently opposing him were never part of his core foundation.
While the Governor recently blocked the use of the state stadium for Wike’s political events, citing construction, the Minister remains undeterred, leaning on his deep-rooted influence across party lines.
