Sheikh Gumi Criticises US Airstrikes in Nigeria, Urges Alternative Partners
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has condemned recent US airstrikes on terrorist camps in north-western Nigeria, warning that the operation could deepen division and undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The strikes, announced by US President Donald Trump, targeted Islamic State terrorists. Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the operation, citing intelligence sharing and strategic coordination under international law.
Gumi argued that while fighting terrorists is necessary, it should be done by “clean, holy hands,” not foreign powers. He urged the Federal Government to stop military cooperation with the US and seek support from “neutral” nations such as China, Turkey, and Pakistan, insisting that airstrikes alone cannot defeat terrorism.
He warned that US involvement may attract anti-US forces and polarise Nigeria, describing the strike on Sokoto, a largely Muslim region, as symbolic of a “neo-Crusade.”
