BREAKING NEWS: Presidency Explains Why Egbetokun Resigned as IGP, the reason will shoke you.

BREAKING NEWS: Presidency Explains Why Egbetokun Resigned as IGP, the reason will suck you.

According to a report by PUNCH on Tuesday 24th February 2026, Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has resigned as Inspector-General of Police, officially citing family obligations as the reason for stepping down.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told PUNCH Online that Egbetokun submitted a resignation letter on Tuesday, explaining that he needed to focus on family matters requiring his undivided attention.

However, multiple sources within the Presidency revealed that the IGP’s resignation followed a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening, where he was asked to step down; One senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed, “It was in that meeting he was asked to go.”

Eyewitnesses noted that Egbetokun arrived at the Villa around 6:40 pm in his official Toyota Land Cruiser (number plate NPF-01), dressed in his black uniform; He briefly retrieved his notepad from an aide before entering the Villa, at the same time governors were gathering for an interfaith Iftar with the President, initially causing uncertainty about the purpose of his visit.

A source at the Villa later confirmed that Egbetokun had been specifically summoned by the President; Security officials added that the IGP returned to the State House around 8:00 pm, with his vehicle subjected to routine checks by DSS operatives.

Egbetokun, appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, faced growing criticism over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, including kidnappings, banditry, and terrorist attacks; High-profile security incidents during his tenure include the abduction of nearly 300 schoolchildren from St. Mary’s Boarding School in Niger State in November 2025 and mass killings in communities in Kwara State earlier this February.

During Monday’s Iftar, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and emphasized the establishment of state police, stating: “Security is the foundation of prosperity. Without it, farms cannot flourish, businesses cannot grow, and families cannot sleep in peace.”

Before becoming IGP, Egbetokun served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigations Department; He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 following an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
