A member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has stated that while he cannot confirm the exact security presence at the time of the Edo incident, the attack on party leaders was deliberate and extended beyond the initial venue.
Speaking on Arise Television on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Okonkwo addressed questions about whether police and other security agencies were present when the violence occurred in Benin City.
Responding to the inquiry, he said, “Yes. Now, what I will not tell you now, to my knowledge, was whether there was any policeman that was there or not. But what I will tell you was that whether there was a policeman or not, it’s either they were not enough or there were none.”
He maintained that the sequence of events pointed to a targeted assault: “But I can say authoritatively, what I know is that they were attacked in the venue that they held the meeting because they had to leave there when they saw that there was an advancement of politically motivated perks to destroy their lives.”
Okonkwo continued, “And then they ran to Chief Oyegun’s house and they chased them their. And because of the fortification of the gates, they were now trying to blast the gates to know whether they can enter.”
According to him, vehicles within the premises were damaged: “They destroyed all the cars. But fortunately for the people inside, they couldn’t get entrance. Maybe all our leaders would have been dead by now.”
