BREAKING NEWS: (Rivers Crisis) Fubara told how to stop Impêachment

According to PM News report on 28 January, 2026, Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is fully aware of what he needs to do if he wants to avoid impeachment.

Olayinka made the remarks during an interview on The Morning Brief, a popular television programme on Channels Television, which was monitored by PM News.

He was reacting to the growing political tension in Rivers State, following the commencement of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The political crisis in the oil-rich state has continued to generate heated debate, with rival camps trading accusations over alleged attempts to destabilise the government.

However, Olayinka dismissed claims that the impeachment move was being orchestrated by his principal, former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike.

According to him, the lawmakers are acting independently within their constitutional powers.

He emphasized that the decision to initiate impeachment proceedings rests solely with the Rivers State House of Assembly and not with any external political actor.

Olayinka said, “Governor Fubara knows what steps to take if he does not want to be removed from office. Politics requires careful navigation. He should act wisely and strategically rather than appearing to be helpless or complaining about the situation.”

He further noted that political leadership comes with responsibility and the ability to manage internal party dynamics and institutional relationships, particularly with the legislature.

According to Olayinka, portraying the impeachment process as a personal attack or external conspiracy could worsen the situation instead of resolving it.

The media aide maintained that Governor Fubara, as an experienced politician, understands the workings of power and governance and should engage the process with maturity.

He stressed that survival in politics often depends on negotiation, compromise, and strategic decision-making.

The statement comes at a time of heightened political anxiety in Rivers State, as residents and political observers closely watch developments at the State House of Assembly.

The impeachment proceedings have sparked concerns about political stability and the continuity of governance in the state.

Supporters of Governor Fubara have accused political opponents of attempting to undermine his administration, while others argue that the impeachment process is a legitimate constitutional mechanism that should not be politicised.
