RIVERS ASSEMBLY EXPRESSES GRATITUDE TO RIVERS PEOPLE, PRESIDENT TINUBU AND COURT OF APPEAL
•••Says the Assembly is not expecting any Caretaker list from the Governor
The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Friday, expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their continued support and trust, and also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sterling leadership qualities.
Addressing a press conference, the House stated the legal stance with regard to the appointment of caretaker committees for Local Government Councils, affirming that the House is not expecting any list to that effect from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking at the Press Conference, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule emphasized the importance of adhering to the Nigerian Constitution, which stipulates that Local Government Councils must be administered by democratically elected officials.
Citing Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), Rt. Hon. Amaewhule declared that any attempt to appoint caretaker committees for the Local Government Councils in the State would be deemed unconstitutional and a deviation from democratic norms; adding that the Constitution only guarantees a Local Government System governed by democratically elected officials.
"The practice of appointing caretaker committees undermines the democratic process, and it is an aberration. We, as representatives of the people, stand firm in upholding the rule of law, ensuring that governance at the local level remains in the hands of elected officials" Rt Hon. Amaewhule maintained.
We as Rivers people don't trust the 25 Assembly member because your loyalty is to the FCT minister and not the Rivers people.
