Nigeria @66: Dickson Calls for Unity, Good Governance as He Marks Independence, Bayelsa at 30

Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has called on Nigerians to uphold national unity, democratic values and good governance as the country celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Dickson made the call in a goodwill message to Nigerians on Wednesday, October 1, 2026, as Nigeria commemorates 66 years of independence. The anniversary also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State.

According to him, the occasion offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and renew their commitment to building a more prosperous and united Nigeria.

The former governor stressed the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting justice, equity and equal opportunities for all citizens.

Dickson noted that Nigeria’s future depends largely on the collective commitment of its citizens and leaders to democratic principles, responsible governance and peaceful coexistence.

He also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the challenges facing the country, expressing confidence in the resilience and potential of the Nigerian people.

As Bayelsa State marks 30 years since its creation, Dickson’s message also highlights the broader journey of development and governance in the state, where he served as governor from 2012 to 2020.

He called for continued efforts towards building a Nigeria where unity, justice, accountability and good governance remain central to national development.
