Wike Will Help Tinubu Win Bigger in 2027, Olayinka Says
Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said President Bola Tinubu could record a wider margin of victory in the 2027 presidential election than he achieved in 2023.
Olayinka made the remarks while speaking on TVC’s Breakfast programme on Monday, September 7, 2026, where he discussed the evolving political landscape ahead of the next presidential election and Wike’s position in the race.
According to Olayinka, developments within Nigeria’s political space since the 2023 election have strengthened Tinubu’s chances of securing another term in office.
He also argued that Wike’s political influence would play a significant role in helping the President secure more votes in 2027 than he did in the previous election.
Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has continued to support Tinubu despite retaining his membership of the opposition party. Olayinka maintained that the minister has never attempted to hide his political preference.
Wike Has Made His Position Clear
Addressing questions about how Wike could support Tinubu while remaining a PDP member, Olayinka said his principal had been open about where he stood politically.
He explained that Wike had previously informed Sandy Onor, who, according to the account, approached him to discuss his intention to seek the PDP presidential ticket in 2027.
Olayinka said Wike made it clear during their interaction that Tinubu remained his preferred candidate.
For him, Wike’s decision to openly state his position was more transparent than remaining within the PDP while secretly working against its presidential candidate.
“It will not be fair to the PDP if he (Wike) did not come out in the open to say, ‘This is where I am.’”
Olayinka stressed that Wike’s position should not be interpreted as an attempt to prevent Onor from pursuing his presidential ambition.
He said the PDP candidate remains free to contest the election, adding that Wike had simply made his own political preference known.
Olayinka: Wike Is Not Stopping Anyone From Contesting
According to Olayinka, Wike has maintained a straightforward approach by telling political actors where he stands rather than creating uncertainty about his intentions.
He said the minister’s support for Tinubu should therefore not come as a surprise, given that Wike has repeatedly expressed his preference publicly.
Olayinka further suggested that the minister’s political network and influence could become an important factor in the 2027 presidential contest, potentially helping Tinubu improve on his 2023 electoral performance.
The comments come as Nigeria’s major political parties and their potential candidates gradually position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with alliances and individual political calculations expected to play an increasingly important role in the months ahead.
