BREAKING NEWS: 74 PDP Coordinators Defect to APC, Declare Support for Senator Shuaib Salisu in Ogun Central

74 PDP Coordinators Defect to APC, Declare Support for Senator Shuaib Salisu in Ogun Central

A significant political realignment has taken place in Ogun State as no fewer than 74 ward coordinators of the Iyaniwura Foundation, a political structure linked to Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, have withdrawn their support from the group and pledged allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Ogun Central Senatorial District candidate, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu.

The coordinators, alongside several former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Abeokuta South Local Government Area, formally joined the APC during a reception hosted by Senator Salisu.

The delegation was led by several notable former PDP leaders, including former Abeokuta South PDP Chairman, Alhaji Moruf Akanbi Olajide; former PDP State Ex-Officio, Mrs. Ayoka Adams; former PDP LGA Secretary, Hon. Gbenga Adewale; and other former ward executives and party stakeholders from across Abeokuta South.

The event also attracted numerous former PDP members and supporters who announced their decision to leave the opposition party and align with the APC.

Salisu Welcomes Defectors

Addressing the gathering, Senator Salisu described the development as a strong indication of growing confidence in the APC and its leadership.

According to him, the decision by experienced political figures and grassroots coordinators to join the ruling party reflects a shared belief in its vision and direction.

He noted that the move was not merely about increasing party membership but about attracting individuals with valuable political experience and a commitment to public service.

Senator Salisu assured the new members that the party values their support and would work closely with them to advance development and effective representation across Ogun Central.

He further expressed confidence that their decision to join the APC would contribute positively to the party’s efforts to deliver meaningful progress to the people.

Why the Coordinators Left PDP

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Alhaji Moruf Akanbi Olajide said the decision followed extensive consultations among party leaders, coordinators, and supporters.

According to him, the group carefully assessed the political landscape before deciding to throw its weight behind Senator Salisu and the APC.

Olajide explained that the former PDP members were attracted by what they described as Senator Salisu’s accessibility, leadership style, and commitment to the welfare of the people.

He added that the defectors believe the APC provides a stronger platform for achieving effective representation, community development, and empowerment opportunities for residents of Ogun Central.

Growing Political Momentum

The latest defections add to the growing political activity ahead of future elections in Ogun State, with both major parties seeking to strengthen their grassroots structures.

Political observers say the movement of experienced ward coordinators and former PDP leaders into the APC could further reshape the political landscape in Abeokuta South and the wider Ogun Central Senatorial District.

For Senator Salisu and the APC, the development represents a boost to their support base, while highlighting the ongoing competition for political influence within the state.
