Wike: New Judges’ Quarters May Be Allocated on Owner-Occupier Basis Pending Tinubu’s Approval

Wike: New Judges’ Quarters May Be Allocated on Owner-Occupier Basis Pending Tinubu’s Approval

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the newly commissioned housing units for judges in Abuja may be allocated on an owner-occupier basis, subject to the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wike made the announcement on Wednesday during the inauguration of 20 residential units built for judges of the FCT High Court in Katampe. The project forms part of activities marking President Tinubu’s third year in office.

According to the minister, the proposed owner-occupier arrangement will also require the endorsement of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, before it can be implemented.

Speaking at the event, Wike reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers in the Federal Capital Territory.

He revealed that the government’s support for the judiciary would not end with the provision of residential accommodation, noting that new court facilities for judges and magistrates are expected to be completed and handed over before the end of the year.

“We are not going to stop at residences. Before the end of the year, we will hand over structures for Judges’ Courts and Magistrates’ Courts to enable them perform their duties more efficiently,” Wike said.

The minister also recounted a conversation with one of the judges who expressed excitement about moving into the new homes immediately. However, Wike clarified that the allocation process would depend on obtaining the necessary approvals from the President and the AGF.

He expressed confidence that the required authorization would be secured, allowing the houses to be allocated under the owner-occupier scheme.

In addition, Wike announced plans to expand housing infrastructure for judicial officers in the FCT, assuring that another 20 housing units would be constructed before the expiration of President Tinubu’s first term in office.

He noted that the current number of housing units is insufficient to accommodate all judges at once, making further construction necessary to meet the growing demand.

The development is part of ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to strengthen the judiciary through improved welfare, infrastructure, and enhanced working conditions for judges and magistrates in the nation’s capital.
