BREAKING NEWS: ADC Reportedly Moves to Replace Adamawa Governorship Candidate Omar Suleiman Ahead of 2027 Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is reportedly considering replacing its Adamawa State governorship candidate, Omar Suleiman, with Alhaji Tukur Modibbo ahead of the 2027 general election, according to fresh claims from political analyst Imran Wakili.

The development comes despite repeated denials from the party’s Adamawa State leadership, which has maintained that Suleiman remains the party’s duly recognised candidate.

Wakili, in a post shared on X on Tuesday, claimed that the decision to replace Suleiman had already been concluded and allegedly received the backing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent members of the ADC in Adamawa State.

According to him, the move was a strategic political decision aimed at improving the party’s chances in the 2027 governorship race, although he noted that the ADC had already lost some momentum in the state due to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding its ticket.

He wrote that while the decision could strengthen the party’s position, the timing of the change might affect its impact, as some supporters had already moved to other political camps.

The speculation follows weeks of uncertainty over the ADC’s governorship ticket in Adamawa. Earlier reports had suggested that former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Abdulrahman Haske, could replace Suleiman after reportedly joining the ADC. However, those claims faded after Haske returned to the APC.

Attention later shifted to Alhaji Tukur Modibbo, with reports emerging that he could become the party’s new flag bearer for the 2027 election.

However, the ADC leadership in Adamawa has continued to reject the reports, insisting that no official decision has been made regarding the governorship candidate.

A founding member of the party in the state, Suleiman Adamu Jimeta, described the reports as false and capable of causing unnecessary tension within the party.

Jimeta maintained that Omar Suleiman remains the legitimate candidate of the ADC, adding that any change to the party’s ticket would have to follow proper internal procedures and official communication channels.

He warned that continued speculation could create divisions among party members and negatively affect the ADC’s preparation for the 2027 governorship election.

As of Tuesday evening, the Adamawa State chapter of the ADC had not issued any official statement confirming the replacement of Suleiman.

The controversy comes amid recent disagreements involving former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and the ADC leadership over the party’s presidential primary process.

Atiku Abubakar’s camp had previously criticised Lawal’s position on the ADC primary, arguing that he accepted the process that produced his cousin, Omar Suleiman, as Adamawa governorship candidate while questioning the outcome of the presidential primary that favoured Atiku.

Lawal had earlier resigned from the ADC, alleging irregularities in the party’s presidential primary, a claim that was rejected by Atiku’s supporters.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the reported leadership decision in Adamawa is expected to attract further attention as political parties continue to reposition and strengthen their chances ahead of the polls.
