Breaking news: We Want Somebody Who Scores The Highest Vote To Be The Winner–Akpabio
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said that even in a governorship election, a candidate who scores the second-highest vote may not meet the two-thirds spread requirement in local governments and could be declared a winner.
He added that such an outcome is undesirable, stressing the need for a system that allows Nigerians to truly elect their leaders.
Akpabio made these remarks during an interview with Channels Television following the signing of the amended Electoral Act into law.
He described the legislative exercise as rigorous and consultative, highlighting the effort lawmakers put into the process.
The Senate President stated that legislators were confident the amendments reflect the expectations of citizens across the country.
Addressing criticism surrounding the amendment process, Akpabio emphasized the difference between public reactions and formal legislative procedures.
He noted that while public opinion varied, the National Assembly followed a structured approach to ensure the bill met legal and democratic standards.
Akpabio highlighted that members of the National Assembly adjusted their schedules to finalize the bill, showing their commitment to completing the legislative process.
