BREAKING NEWS: The Remover of Mandatory Transmission APC Is Preparing To Tell Opponents In 2027 To Go To Court — Inibehe Effiong
In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of announcing incorrect results in the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State.
In 2023, independent review of the IREV Portal revealed that it was the Labour Party that won the presidential election in Rivers State. But INEC dubiously announced a fake result for the APC.
The reason they do not want compulsory transmission of results without exception, is that they’ll find it difficult to get away with the kind of fraud we saw in Rivers if they don’t leave room for manipulation.
By removing the consequence of failure of mandatory real time transmission, the APC is preparing the groundwork to tell their opponents in 2027 to go to court," he wrote.
In his post, Effiong said an independent review of the IREV portal in 2023 showed that the Labour Party won the presidential election in Rivers State, however, he alleged that INEC declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner instead.
According to him, this alleged discrepancy explains why some politicians are resisting mandatory real-time transmission of results and argued that compulsory electronic transmission would reduce the chances of manipulation during collation, without strict enforcement, he said, room is created for altering outcomes.
Effiong claimed that removing penalties for failing to transmit results electronically could weaken electoral transparency and suggested that such changes may allow political actors to avoid accountability in future elections.
He linked the issue to the 2027 general elections and warned that if reforms are not strengthened, opposition parties may once again be left to challenge disputed results in court, he implied that telling aggrieved parties to go to court has become a pattern after controversial elections.
