The Canadian Union of Public Employees’ move is unsurprising as the public workers union typically endorses New Democrats, but it comes at a time when the party’s leader needs all the support he can get.
The NDP has lost support to the Liberals under Carney. At his final event for the day in Toronto, Singh said both Carney and Poilievre stand to make billionaires richer.
He said Carney's time in private banking made rich people money "on the backs of working-class people."
Singh then turned to Poilievre, who has been campaigning in front of blue-collar workers and has courted support from private-sector unions.
"His plan is to cut services to you and your family, cut health care, cut child care, dental care," said Singh.
On its website, CUPE celebrated policies the NDP has championed over the course of its supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberal government, including pharmacare, dental care, the disability benefit and "anti-scab" legislation.
