In Lagos, I know for a fact that you cannot get on a boat without a lifejacket and I remember when passengers started holding it on their hands rather than wearing, the authorities made it compulsory for everyone going to the boat side of the jetty to always be on a life jacket either you are on a boat or not.
There are even security operatives who ensure conpliance. Infact LASWA no dey take that one play at all.
Now moving forward, adequate attention should be paid to safety on water. Even if you claim to be the best diver on the continent, you have no business on water if you are not adequately safeguarded.
Imagine this so called school excursion where kids are out on water with zero safety put in place. Infact, everyone involved from the school proprietors and teachers to the boat operators should have been prosecuted for this recklessness.
We joke with safeguarding issues too much in this country and that’s why people even think using seatbelt is just to avoid LASTMA or Road Safety apprehension.
Jnr Pope knew it was a bad idea getting on that boat with zero safety but still went ahead despite even recording his fears on a video he shared online. Sadly, he is not here no more but we all have a lesson to learn.
