BREAKING NEWS: Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Appointments Spark Tension Within APC, Raise Concerns Among Opposition Candidates

Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Appointments Spark Tension Within APC, Raise Concerns Among Opposition Candidates

The appointment of prominent opposition politicians to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign council has reportedly triggered discontent within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and raised concerns among opposition candidates over the possible impact on their electoral prospects.

According to findings reported by *Sunday PUNCH*, political tensions are mounting in Osun, Anambra and Rivers states following the selection of opposition figures to coordinate the President’s re-election campaign in the respective states.

Some APC stakeholders have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the appointments, arguing that loyal party members who have remained committed to the party over the years may have been sidelined in favour of politicians from rival political platforms.

Meanwhile, opposition candidates have raised questions about the implications of the alliances for their political ambitions, particularly in the forthcoming National Assembly and state legislative elections. They are reportedly concerned that their party leaders’ involvement in Tinubu’s campaign could weaken their electoral chances against APC candidates.

The controversy followed the unveiling of the expanded Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council on Tuesday, which named Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as campaign coordinators.

Soludo, who belongs to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was appointed to coordinate the President’s campaign in Anambra State. Adeleke, who won the Osun governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party, was named coordinator for Osun State.

Wike, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was appointed to coordinate the campaign in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The appointments are widely viewed as part of efforts to broaden Tinubu’s political support base ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly by attracting influential figures from outside the APC and strengthening the President’s appeal in states where opposition parties have significant influence.

However, the reported reactions suggest that the strategy could create fresh political challenges for the ruling party and opposition platforms alike. While some APC members are concerned about the recognition given to politicians from rival parties, opposition candidates are weighing the potential consequences of their leaders’ alliances with the President.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the appointments have highlighted the complexities of Nigeria’s evolving political alliances and the potential conflict between presidential campaign arrangements and the interests of candidates contesting legislative and other state-level positions.

The extent to which these alliances will influence party unity, voter loyalty and electoral outcomes remains uncertain as the political landscape continues to take shape.
