Sheikh Maraya Criticises Calls for Fuel Subsidy Return, Urges Politicians to Be Honest with Nigerians
Kaduna-based Islamic scholar and former Special Adviser to two former governors of Kaduna State, Sheikh Haliru Maraya, has cautioned political leaders and presidential hopefuls against making promises they may be unable to fulfill in a bid to secure electoral support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Maraya made the remarks while reacting to recent calls by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the return of fuel subsidy. According to a report published by LEADERSHIP on August 31, 2026, the cleric expressed concerns about the economic implications of reinstating the subsidy regime, describing it as unsustainable under Nigeria’s current financial realities.
Speaking on the issue, Maraya argued that the country can no longer afford the enormous costs associated with fuel subsidy payments. He stressed that political leaders should prioritize honesty and transparency when engaging with Nigerians rather than making promises designed solely to attract votes.
According to him, citizens deserve leaders who are willing to present the true state of the nation’s economy and make difficult but necessary decisions for the country’s long-term development.
The Islamic scholar noted that Nigeria previously spent an estimated ₦52 billion daily on fuel subsidies. He maintained that resources saved from the removal of the subsidy could be redirected toward critical infrastructure, social services, and other developmental projects that would have a broader impact on national growth.
Maraya also appealed to Nigerians to remain patient as the country adjusts to the post-subsidy era. He expressed optimism that improvements in the nation’s refining capacity, including the rehabilitation of existing refineries and the establishment of new ones, could help ease economic pressures and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
He emphasized that increased local refining would play a significant role in addressing some of the economic challenges currently facing Nigerians.
Reiterating his position, Maraya stated:
“Presidential candidates should always tell people the truth. They should not deceive Nigerians simply because they want to win votes. People should not make promises they cannot fulfil simply because they want votes and political power.”
His comments add to the growing national debate over fuel subsidy policy and the broader economic strategies that may shape political campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
