BREAKING NEWS: Plateau Government Creates New Ministry, Approves Streetlights and CCTV Expansion Across Jos

The Plateau State Government has approved the creation of a new Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction as part of efforts to strengthen support for vulnerable residents and improve the coordination of humanitarian interventions across the state.

The decision was reached during a meeting of the Plateau State Executive Council chaired by Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House in Rayfield, Jos, on Wednesday.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, announced the development in a statement outlining key resolutions from the council meeting.

According to Ramnap, the newly established ministry will serve as a dedicated institution responsible for coordinating humanitarian assistance, social protection initiatives, and poverty alleviation programmes throughout Plateau State. The ministry is also expected to oversee activities currently handled by the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Trauma Centre, although the government has not yet clarified whether these agencies will be merged into the ministry or operate under its supervision.

The move comes as Plateau State continues to address humanitarian challenges caused by communal conflicts, displacement, and other emergencies affecting several communities. Government officials believe the new ministry will enhance collaboration among state agencies and improve partnerships with federal institutions involved in humanitarian and poverty-reduction efforts.

Government Targets Better Support for Vulnerable Residents

The administration said the establishment of the ministry will ensure that assistance programmes are more effectively coordinated and directed toward residents most in need.

SEMA has traditionally led emergency response operations in the state, including providing relief materials and support for individuals displaced by crises and natural disasters. The government expects the new structure to improve efficiency and eliminate overlaps in humanitarian service delivery.

Jos Main Market and Satellite Market to Undergo Renovation

In addition to the new ministry, the Executive Council approved the renovation of administrative buildings at the Jos Main Market and the Satellite Market.

The government stated that the renovation project is designed to improve operational efficiency, management systems, and overall functionality within the markets, thereby creating a better environment for traders and customers.

Over 4,000 Streetlight Units and 199 CCTV Cameras Approved

As part of efforts to enhance security and public safety, the council also approved the procurement and installation of additional solar-powered streetlights and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

Under the approved programme, 4,029 streetlight infrastructure units will be maintained and expanded, while 199 CCTV cameras will be installed in two phases.

The government said the initiative is aimed at strengthening surveillance, improving visibility in public spaces, and supporting security agencies in monitoring activities across the metropolis.

Although specific locations and project timelines were not disclosed, the administration noted that the expanded street lighting and CCTV network would contribute significantly to crime prevention and emergency response efforts.

Ramnap emphasized that the newly approved projects and institutional reforms demonstrate Governor Mutfwang's commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens, enhancing public safety, and promoting economic growth.

She reaffirmed the government's dedication to implementing policies that encourage inclusive development, improve living standards, and create a sustainable environment for investment and economic prosperity across Plateau State.

The Executive Council meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo and other members of the state cabinet.
