BREAKING NEWS: Wife of Late Major General Rabe Abubakar Rescued After Fierce Gun Battle With Bandits in Katsina.

BREAKING NEWS: Wife of Late Major General Rabe Abubakar Rescued After Fierce Gun Battle With Bandits in Katsina.

The wife of the late retired Nigerian Army officer, Amina Abubakar, has been rescued by troops of the Nigerian Army following a fierce gun battle with armed bandits in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The successful rescue operation comes amid grief for the family following the recent death of her husband, Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while in captivity after suffering health complications.

According to military sources, troops operating under the Nigerian Army's Operation FANSAN YANMA and Operation CLEAN SWEEP III launched an intelligence-driven offensive that led them to the bandits' hideout in Tunga village within the Matazu axis of Katsina State.

Upon making contact with the criminals, the troops engaged them in a fierce exchange of gunfire. Under intense military pressure, the bandits reportedly fled the area. However, before escaping, they shot Hajiya Amina Abubakar, leaving her wounded.

Military personnel immediately administered first aid to stabilize her condition before evacuating her to a medical facility for urgent treatment. Sources indicate that she is currently receiving medical attention.

Background to the Abduction

The late Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.

During their captivity, the abductors released videos demanding a prisoner exchange involving detained gang members as well as the return of seized cattle.

The tragedy deepened on June 13, 2026, when the Katsina State Government confirmed that the retired senior military officer had died in captivity due to medical complications. He was subsequently laid to rest on June 14, 2026.

Major General Rabe Abubakar served as a former Director of Defence Information and was widely respected within Nigeria's military establishment for his contributions to national security and public military communications.

Military Intensifies Operations

Following the rescue of Hajiya Amina Abubakar, security forces have reportedly intensified clearance operations across parts of Katsina State aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and tracking down the bandit leaders responsible for the abduction and subsequent attack.

Military authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to restoring security across the North-West region and ensuring that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice.

Editor’s Note

The rescue of Hajiya Amina Abubakar offers a measure of relief amid the painful loss of her husband, Major General Rabe Abubakar. However, the incident once again highlights the growing security challenges facing many communities across northern Nigeria. The Nation's Eyes Newspaper believes that sustained intelligence gathering, improved rural security architecture, and stronger coordination among security agencies remain essential in the fight against banditry and kidnappings.
