BREAKING NEWS: All The Promises That Have Been Made, We Are Going To Fulfil Them–Nyesom Wike

BREAKING NEWS: All The Promises That Have Been Made, We Are Going To Fulfil Them–Nyesom Wike

According to a report by The Sun published on Friday, May 8, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended the ongoing construction of government-funded residential houses and judicial infrastructure for judges in Abuja, insisting that the projects do not threaten the independence of the judiciary.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection tour of several judicial projects within the Federal Capital Territory, including housing developments for judges, the Court of Appeal Abuja Division, and proposed accommodation for judges of the National Industrial Court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The inspection formed part of activities marking preparations for the third anniversary of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During the visit, the FCT minister explained that the projects were intended to improve the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers. According to him, it is the responsibility of government to provide infrastructure for all arms of government, adding that such support should not be viewed as interference in judicial affairs.

His comments followed concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association over whether direct executive involvement in building houses and office facilities for judges could compromise judicial independence.

The association had warned that the projects could create the impression of financial dependence by the judiciary on the executive branch.

Responding to the criticism, Wike argued that government support for institutions does not automatically translate into political control or influence.

He also accused some critics of applying double standards, noting that several professional organisations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, often receive sponsorship and support from government institutions without losing their independence.

The minister stressed that the priority should be ensuring that judges and judicial workers operate in decent and functional environments.

He noted that poor infrastructure within the judicial sector has remained a long-standing problem and said the current administration decided to address the issue through direct investment in courts, offices, and accommodation.

During the inspection, Wike also visited the Court of Appeal Abuja Division project, which he said was nearly 90 percent completed. Although he acknowledged the significant progress made, he expressed dissatisfaction with certain finishing aspects of the project and directed contractors to correct all identified defects before commissioning.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to infrastructure delivery, Wike said, “All the promises that have been made, we are going to fulfil them. That is why we are going around to inspect and ensure contractors are ready.
