BREAKING NEWS: Fubara Has Not Informed Me About His 2027 Governorship Plans – Wike

BREAKING NEWS: Fubara Has Not Informed Me About His 2027 Governorship Plans – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has not informed him of any intention to seek re-election in the 2027 governorship contest.

The former Rivers State governor made the revelation during a media chat held in Abuja, where he was asked whether he would support Governor Fubara’s bid for a second term in office.

Responding directly to the question on possible backing for the governor’s re-election, Wike stated: “Fubara hasn’t told me if he will contest for the 2027 governorship election.” He stressed that no such discussion had taken place between them regarding the governor’s future political plans.

The comment comes against the backdrop of shifting political dynamics in Rivers State, particularly since Governor Fubara’s move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike, who continues to wield significant influence within the PDP while openly supporting President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election, has described Fubara’s party switch as a personal choice that does not automatically translate to an assured governorship ticket or victory under the APC.

During the same media engagement in the nation’s capital, Wike maintained that decisions about who succeeds in the Rivers governorship would involve wider consultations at the appropriate time. He refrained from either endorsing or rejecting Fubara’s potential second-term ambition, noting instead that “when the time comes for the governorship election, people will sit down and talk about it.”

Political watchers interpret Wike’s carefully worded response as reflective of the still-delicate relationship between the two leaders. While public disagreements over party structures and loyalty to the president have persisted, Wike has consistently denied holding any personal grudge and has reiterated his focus on ensuring Rivers delivers strong support for President Tinubu in 2027.

Governor Fubara is yet to issue a public reaction to the minister’s latest remarks. In recent weeks, however, the governor has received endorsements from sections of the APC in the state and has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to mobilizing maximum votes for President Tinubu’s re-election, signaling his deepening alignment with the ruling party.

With the 2027 elections still more than a year away, Rivers State continues to be a major political flashpoint. Observers expect more definitive positions, candidate declarations, and clarity on Wike’s exact role in the governorship race to emerge once serious negotiations and alignments intensify.

For now, Wike’s Abuja media chat appearance has left one thing clear: until Governor Fubara personally raises the matter of contesting in 2027, any conversation about his re-election remains premature.
