BREAKING NEWS: 2027 PDP Will Reclaim Power Without Atiku, Okowa – Senator Abba Moro Vows"
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has conveyed his confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will bounce back and emerge stronger, even after the recent departures of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa, his running mate in 2023.
Moro, the Senator representing Benue South, announced this while appearing on Sunday Politics, a political affairs show broadcast by Channels Television.
The lawmaker, speaking candidly, characterized Atiku and Okowa's departure from the party as "good riddance to bad rubbish."
He blamed both individuals for playing a role in the internal crisis that shook the PDP after the 2023 general election, during which the party lost its hold on the presidency.
"Good riddance to bad rubbish," Moro remarked, holding the pair responsible for causing disunity within the party after the election.
He observed that their participation in the internal conflicts had undermined the PDP's structure and electoral prospects, yet he remained hopeful about the party's future without them.
Amid the challenges, Moro expressed confidence that the PDP can recover, restructure, and effectively assume a strong opposition role leading up to the 2027 elections.
He encouraged party members who remain loyal to concentrate on rebuilding efforts instead of lingering over recent defections.
The senator took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of honoring Nigeria’s unwritten North-South rotational agreement for its presidency. He warned political parties against considering northern candidates again in 2027.
Moro argued that Nigerians had already dismissed the idea of a power transition from one northern leader to another in the 2023 elections. He highlighted this by pointing out the PDP's choice of Atiku Abubakar, who is also from the north, as their candidate to follow former President Muhammadu Buhari.
At the same time, the opposition is reorganizing under a new banner, with prominent political figures such as Atiku, Peter Obi, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai coming together to embrace the African Democratic Party (ADC) as their unified platform. This move aims to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Nonetheless, Moro remains hopeful that the PDP can recover its lost ground even with the emergence of new alliances.
