Nigeria Police Arrest a Ghanaian man for Allegedly Removing Tenant’s Roof in Rivers State

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a Ghanaian landlord, Samuel Frimpong, for allegedly removing the roof of his tenant’s apartment in Mgbuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The affected tenant, Anozie Tochukwu, said the incident occurred after he failed to vacate the property within a two-week grace period granted by the landlord. Tochukwu explained that he had lived in the apartment since January 2024 and had consistently paid his rent. However, in late 2025, Frimpong reportedly informed him not to renew his lease, which was due to expire in January 2026, as he intended to renovate the building.

According to Tochukwu, he had already secured a new apartment and showed proof of payment to the landlord on February 1, 2026, requesting an additional 14 days to relocate. He was shocked when, on the morning of February 3, his wife informed him that the roof of their home had been removed. Heavy rainfall later damaged valuables, documents, and household items, while his pregnant wife and two young children were left exposed to the harsh weather.

The tenant estimated his losses at about ₦25 million, claiming several personal belongings and important certificates were destroyed or went missing.

Detectives from the Ozuoba Police Division arrested the landlord after the matter was reported. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect may be charged in court upon completion of the probe.

Reacting to the incident, human rights lawyer Raymond Okocha condemned the act as a serious violation of the law. He emphasized that eviction must follow due legal process, including proper notices and a court order, describing the alleged action as malicious damage and an infringement on the family’s fundamental rights. Okocha called for justice and urged authorities to ensure the law takes its full course.
